Each figure counts a value shown on every company's own stock page. Before a company is counted, every stored number behind the figure must appear in its SEC filing for the same period, or equal a documented formula applied to numbers that do. Companies with any unmatched number are left out, and each page says how many.
Figures that depend on a share price, and figures for companies outside the US, are not published here, because they cannot be checked against a filing. The formulas are on the methodology page. Sectors follow the industry code (SIC) the SEC assigns to each filer, with a modern classification for a few dozen of the largest companies; each page's method section explains where the two differ. To browse the companies behind the numbers, start with stocks by sector.
